Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, also known as La Joconde, portrays Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo. The Louvre dates the painting to 1503–1519.
Painted in oil on poplar wood, the panel measures 79.4 × 53.4 cm. The seated figure appears before a mountainous landscape; fine layers of paint soften the transitions between light and shadow through Leonardo’s sfumato technique.
The painting belongs to the Musée du Louvre’s Department of Paintings, Paris, under inventory numbers INV 779 and MR 316. It is displayed in Room 711, the Salle des États, in the Denon wing.
